Car Stories

RUF CTR Lapping the Nurburgring Nordshleife in 1987

The RUF CTR "Yellowbird" became an automotive legend thanks to Stefan Roser’s unforgettable Nürburgring Nordschleife run, where he drifted and slid the 469-horsepower twin-turbo machine around the 12.9-mile circuit wearing nothing more than a t-shirt and white socks. With no electronic driving aids, traction control, or modern aerodynamic assistance, the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car demanded exceptional skill to control, especially given its notorious turbo lag and tendency toward snap oversteer. Capable of reaching 211 mph (342 km/h), the Yellowbird briefly held the title of the world's fastest production car. The video of Roser’s daring drive spread globally through VHS tapes long before the internet era, cementing both the driver and the Yellowbird in automotive folklore and showcasing one of the most thrilling displays of driver skill ever recorded.
