1981 Camel Trophy - Sumatra Indonesia

The 1981 Camel Trophy was the second edition of the legendary off‑road expedition competition and took place on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, building on the unexpected success of the inaugural 1980 event. Still restricted to West German participants, the event featured five teams (eight men and two women) who drove specially prepared, sandglow‑yellow V8 Range Rover Classics across an arduous route of roughly 1,600 kilometers, running from the volcanic highlands near Medan in northern Sumatra to the swampy lowlands around Jambi in the south and crossing the equator along the way. Starting in April 1981, the teams faced dense jungle, deep mud, wide rivers, fragile bridges, extreme heat, and bureaucratic obstacles, testing both human endurance and vehicle durability. Widely regarded as the event that firmly established the Camel Trophy’s reputation, the Sumatra expedition demonstrated the capability of Land Rover vehicles in extreme conditions and helped cement the competition’s image as the “Olympics of four‑wheel drive”.
