1984 Nürburgring Race of Champions

The 1984 Nürburgring Race of Champions, also known as the 1984 Nürburgring Eröffnungsrennen (Opening Race), was an exhibition race organized by Mercedes-Benz and held at the Nürburgring GP-Strecke on May 12, 1984, to celebrate the circuit's opening. It featured 20 of the world's top drivers, including nine of the fourteen Formula One world champions still alive at the time (and two future champions Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna), marking the most F1 world champions in any major motor race history. All drivers competed in identical, slightly modified Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 models. The 12-lap race was won by Senna and is widely considered the moment he emerged onto the world stage of motor racing, defeating some of the world's greatest drivers in equal cars. His victory is often compared to Rudolf Caracciola's triumph in the inaugural car race at the Nürburgring (the 1927 Eifelrennen).
